With its adaptive
optics and much larger aperture, the ‘TMT’ will deliver finer detail
than the Hubble Space Telescope. Groundbreaking for the telescope
occurred near the summit on Mauna Kea, Hawaii on October 7th, 2014. The primary mirror is 30 meters across, 3 times the size of the current largest telescope. It is virtually impossible to build a mirror this large out of a piece of glass , so the objective lens will be made up of 36 segments. Using adaptgive optics the telescope will point a laser at its target observing the atmospheric effects, then using computers to adjust the image to its best quality.
